When I was given my assignment and told to pick a disability to learn about, the first thing that came to mind was that I could do something easy and that I knew. For example, my knowledge of autism or ADHD is better developed because of personal experience. But the more we discussed it in class I knew I needed to do something that would challenge me and allow me to grow. So I made a list of three disabilities that I first wanted to look at that interested me. When I looked at those three and narrowed it down, the one that I wanted to work on was cerebral palsy. When I originally thought of CP I thought of one disability, and through doing my research I quickly learned that I was wrong. CP does affect many lives (more than we think). I learned there are three main types of cerebral palsy and one that is a mixture. I realized that there is a lot to learn.
I am glad I decided to take a higher road and challenge myself to learn about something new. It required coming out of my comfort zone. By doing this I was giving myself an advantage in knowing about another disability and how to help them.
Knowledge is power, knowledge consists understanding, knowledge allows us to do our job is an educational assistant more effectively.
